The Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation makes contributions toward preserving and maintaining the history of Washington and Wilkes County, Georgia.

These are some of the recent donations made by the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation broken into categories by site:

Callaway Plantation (City of Washington)

  • $3,000 Mitsubishi heating and air-conditioning wall-mounted unit installed in Gray House
  • $5,000 donation to paint the historic Gilmer House (after assisting in the acquisition of the house)
  • $10,000 column restoration project at Brick House

Washington Historical Museum (City of Washington)

  • $5,000 donation to restore the Doctor’s Office
  • $3,500 donation for new signage
  • $2,000 donation for new period-appropriate window treatments
  • $2,000 to purchase exhibit cabinets
  • $900 donation to acquire artifacts from the Nash Farm civil war museum

Resthaven Cemetery (City of Washington)

  • $4,000 for cemetery survey of needs assessment
  • $1,200 for stump grinding project

Robert Toombs House (Wilkes County)

  • $8,000 grant for operating costs during the administrative shift from State to County maintenance. The Foundation kept the museum open for tourists while those changes were implemented.
  • $375 for electrical repairs
  • $300 to the Robert Toombs House to remove bees that had taken up residence in the roof
  • $50 donation for neighboring county school to attend field trip at Robert Toombs House

Wilkes County – Tourism

  • $2,500 for the interpretive marker at the courthouse, which is featured by the Civil War Heritage Trails; annual contribution of $200 accompanies that marker
  • $1,200 donation for Washington-Wilkes to appear in Classic South brochure map

Wilkes County Board of Education

  • $420 for field trips to museums

Kettle Creek Battlefield Association (Wilkes County)

  • $5,000 seed money for the first archeological dig at the site
  • $2,500 to put towards land acquisition for the park
  • $1,500 to help develop an educational rubric for local teachers to use the site

Cherry Grove Schoolhouse

  • $130 for tarps to be placed on roof in preservation efforts

North Alexander School Association
